Washington: few pumps, deep roots

Washington has one of the oldest biodiesel cultures in the country and one of the shortest station lists. Seattle's Dr. Dan's Alternative Fuel Werks has sold B99 in Ballard since the early 2000s, and it and Hans Foreign Car Repair in West Seattle are still the places to buy high-blend fuel. Most of the remaining stations are Chevron sites in Clark County (Vancouver, Ridgefield, Washougal) — effectively an extension of the Portland market across the Columbia.

On the policy side, state law requires state agencies to use at least 20% biodiesel in their diesel vehicles and equipment, which is why Washington State Ferries and WSDOT are among the largest biodiesel users in the Northwest. Washington's Clean Fuel Standard, which took effect in 2023, works like the California and Oregon programs and is expected to bring more renewable diesel and biodiesel blends to retail pumps over the decade.

Tips for Washington drivers

  • Between Vancouver and Seattle there's one listed stop on I-5 (Castle Rock); east of the Cascades there are none. Plan accordingly.
  • B99 in a Puget Sound winter is fine most days, but it will cloud in a cold snap. Dr. Dan's and other B99 sellers will tell you when to blend down.
