Which pump for which engine

The number after the R is the renewable diesel share. What matters for your warranty is the biodiesel that may be blended in alongside it.

Washington: a Portland suburb and two cardlocks

Washington's renewable diesel map is really Clark County. Thirteen of the state's listed pumps are Chevron stations in Vancouver, Ridgefield, Battle Ground, Camas and Washougal, all selling the same R55 + B20 blend Chevron sells across the river in Portland. They exist because Portland's renewable fuel rules created the supply, not because of anything Washington has required yet. The other two pumps are PetroCard Pacific Pride cardlocks in Seattle and Kirkland selling straight R99 to fleet-card holders.

That should change. Washington's Clean Fuel Standard, run by the Department of Ecology, took effect on January 1, 2023 and works like the Oregon and California programs: fuels below the carbon-intensity target earn credits that higher-carbon fuels have to buy. A 2025 law (HB 1409) raised the target to a 45% cut in transportation-fuel carbon intensity by 2038. Renewable diesel is the cheapest way for a diesel supplier to generate those credits, which is exactly how California's pumps got converted.

Tips for Washington drivers

  • Between Vancouver and the Seattle cardlocks there is nothing listed on I-5. Fill up in Clark County or carry on to Oregon.
  • The Seattle and Kirkland sites take Pacific Pride and other fleet cards only; call before relying on them.
  • For a B5-limited engine, the Chevron R55 + B20 pumps are over the limit. See the Washington biodiesel page for the state's B99 sellers, or use R99 in Oregon.

Program details are from the Washington Department of Ecology. The current state list is on the AFDC Washington laws and incentives page.
