Nebraska: a big soybean state with a short station list
Nebraska grows a great deal of the soybean oil that becomes biodiesel, but at retail it lags well behind Iowa next door. The public list is eight Casey's stores clustered around Lincoln and the southeast corner of the state (Eagle, Bennet, Palmyra, Crete, Seward, Tecumseh), plus the Anew Travel Center in Cambridge, which is the only stop in the western two-thirds of the state and offers a choice of B5, B10 or B20. Omaha has no listed public pump; the nearest are across the river in Council Bluffs, Iowa, which has ten.
The state has started to close the gap. In 2023 the Legislature passed a biodiesel tax credit for retailers, a per-gallon credit on the biodiesel they sell, aimed at getting more stations to carry blends. Until then Nebraska had relied mostly on producer-side support, which helps plants but does little for pump availability.
Tips for Nebraska drivers
- On I-80, plan on fueling in Iowa or around Lincoln. West of Lincoln there is no listed B20 on the interstate itself; Cambridge is about 40 miles south of it on US-6/34.
- A third of the stations drop to B5 in winter. For the rest, use an anti-gel additive during a Plains cold snap, as you would with regular diesel.
