What the R number on the pump means
AFDC records every renewable diesel pump as “RD” plus the renewable share, and flags whether biodiesel is in the blend. Five kinds of pump cover all 1,237 listings. The last column is the one that matters if your engine maker caps you at B5.
| Pump says | Pumps | What’s in it | Mostly sold by | OK for a B5-only engine? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R99 | 182 (14%) | 99% renewable diesel; the last 1% is petroleum diesel, a holdover from blender-credit rules. | 76, Propel Fuels | Yes — Any diesel engine, including ones limited to B5 |
| R95 (up to B5) | 558 (45%) | 95% renewable diesel plus up to 5% biodiesel. Sold as plain “renewable diesel.” | 76, Chevron | Yes — Any diesel engine; still within the B5 every manufacturer allows |
| R80 + B20 | 428 (34%) | 80% renewable diesel, 20% biodiesel. Carries the yellow “Biodiesel Blend” label. | Chevron, Pearson Fuels | No — Engines approved for B20 (Ford, GM and Ram 2011+, most heavy-duty 2007+) |
| R55 + B20 | 65 (5%) | 55% renewable diesel, 20% biodiesel, 25% petroleum diesel. Chevron in Oregon and Washington. | Chevron | No — Engines approved for B20 |
| Other RD blends | 4 (0%) | R20 and R50 blends with petroleum diesel; a few seasonal listings. | ARCO, Pearson Fuels | Yes — Any diesel engine unless the listing says biodiesel is in the blend |
The sign on the pump rarely matches the data field. 76 calls its R95 and R99 hoses “Renewable Diesel”; Chevron’s R80 + B20 pumps wear the yellow Biodiesel Blend label because of the biodiesel share; Propel sells R99 as “Diesel HPR.” The FTC’s Fuel Rating Rule (16 CFR 306) treats renewable diesel as “biomass-based diesel” and requires a label on any blend above 5%, so a straight R99 pump should carry a “Biomass-Based Diesel” label somewhere, but the brand signage is what you’ll notice. When in doubt, the blend column in the tables below is what the retailer reported to DOE.
Why the biodiesel? California’s Alternative Diesel Fuel regulation requires biodiesel blends above B5 to be paired with a NOx-mitigation measure, and blending with renewable diesel (R55 + B20, R80 + B20) is one of the accepted ways. That’s where the hybrid pumps come from, and why 493 of them also appear on our biodiesel state pages.

What it costs
We don’t know, and neither does anyone publishing a national number. The DOE’s quarterly Alternative Fuel Price Report tracks diesel, B20 and B99–B100 but has no renewable diesel series, and there is no federal survey of R99 pump prices.
What can be said: in California and Oregon the low-carbon-fuel credit is paid to the supplier per gallon, which is why R99 generally sits within a few cents of regular diesel at the same station rather than at a premium, and why 76 has been able to run app discounts on it. Outside those programs, bulk R99 is usually priced above diesel. Factor in about 4% lower energy per gallon when you compare.
Renewable diesel FAQ
What is renewable diesel?
A diesel fuel made from fats and vegetable oils (used cooking oil, tallow, soybean and canola oil) by hydrotreating them with hydrogen until the molecules are plain hydrocarbons, the same kind found in petroleum diesel. It meets the ordinary diesel specification, ASTM D975, so it can be used straight or blended in any amount. Most of it is sold as R99: 99% renewable diesel with 1% petroleum. Europe calls the same fuel HVO.
Is renewable diesel the same as biodiesel?
No. They start from the same fats and oils but are made differently and behave differently. Biodiesel is a methyl ester (ASTM D6751) sold in blends like B20 and limited by most engine makers to 20%. Renewable diesel is a hydrocarbon that meets the diesel spec itself, so there is no blend cap, no gelling problem and no storage penalty. The full comparison is in renewable diesel vs biodiesel.
My owner’s manual says B5 only. Can I use renewable diesel?
Yes, as long as the pump is R99 or R95. The B5 limit is about biodiesel esters, and those pumps contain none or no more than 5%. The 493 pumps labelled R80 + B20 or R55 + B20 are over a B5 limit because of their biodiesel share, not their renewable diesel. Our engine guide lists the approved biodiesel blend by make.
Why is almost all of it in California?
Because California pays for it. The state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard gives fuel suppliers credits for every ton of carbon they avoid, and renewable diesel cuts carbon intensity by about 65% on CARB’s numbers, so nearly the entire U.S. supply flows there. 1,135 of the 1,237 public pumps are in California. Oregon and Washington run similar programs and account for most of the rest.
Can I buy renewable diesel outside the West Coast?
Barely, at retail: 6 public pumps in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, New Jersey, New York. Fleets elsewhere buy it in bulk from fuel distributors, and a few heating-oil dealers in the Northeast sell it. The 16 U.S. plants can make about 2.9 billion gallons a year, so supply isn’t the constraint; the credits that make it worth selling at a pump are.
Does renewable diesel cost more than diesel?
There is no public price series for R99, so we can’t give you a number. The DOE’s quarterly Alternative Fuel Price Report tracks B20 and B99 but not renewable diesel. In California and Oregon the low-carbon-fuel credits usually bring it to within a few cents of regular diesel, and 76 has at times discounted it through its app. Expect roughly 4% lower fuel economy: renewable diesel holds about 123,700 BTU per gallon against 128,500 for petroleum diesel (AFDC fuel properties).
